Maximizing the Stimulus: Why Localization Matters and How to Achieve It
Hosted by Michael Shuman, director of research and public policy, BALLE
US federal monies are now pouring into state, county, and local economies to jump state a nation teetering on recession. How can communities make sure they get the most bang for the buck? This workshop will review recent evidence about the virtues of localization, and the practical tools economic developers are using to achieve it. Among the tools covered will be incentive reforms, procurement, zoning, pensions, and securities laws. It will also feature some of the best examples of this work in Colorado, including economic gardening programs, transition towns, and independent business alliances. The content will be especially designed for elected officials, chamber of commerce heads, economic developers, and other civil servants. What can we learn from the US economic development strategy? And how can we learn from other countries and communities that are getting it right?!
