New Economy Roundtable
Draft Vision Statement
We Believe
A successful economy will work for all people and communities and meet our basic human needs, including food, shelter, health care, education, jobs, and energy.
A successful economy will be sustainable and not damage or degrade the natural environment or the economic resources of future generations.
A successful economy will provide opportunities for all people to find satisfying work, develop their human potential, and participate fairly in the value they help create.
A successful economy will have markets and financial institutions that are fair, transparent, well regulated, and accountable for all participants.
A successful economy will release the creativity of the more than six billion people who share the planet toward new solutions, products, and services.
A successful economy is possible given the political will.
We Seek
Comprehensive reforms that address the current failures of the global economy as well as a range of other urgent, complex, and interrelated challenges, including climate change.
Systemic solutions that address root causes, not ad hoc, piecemeal, or narrowly nationalistic approaches that are focused on symptoms.
Collective input and effort of leaders from many disciplines and communities, not just top-down adjustments to current markets by regulators and economic experts.
Assessment and application of alternative models and approaches, which have been developed in the periphery of public awareness, that together point the way to a more just and sustainable economy.
We Propose
To rise to the challenge of this transformative moment in history by coming together as a community of practitioners and thought leaders who are researching, creating, and implementing equitable and sustainable economic alternatives, in order to:
- put forth a collective vision for systemic economic change,
- advance and secure specific reforms,
- develop an action agenda for accelerating public policy, investment, and incentives that support systemic solutions, and
- build the capacity to implement such an agenda.
